Description

Antispasmodic (spasmolytic) and anticholinergic drug which suppresses spasms of the digestive system.

Features

Only FDA-approved spasmolytic for control of abdominal pain associated with spasmodic colic, flatulent colic and simple impactions.
Antispasmodic (spasmolytic) to relax smooth muscles.
Does not disguise worsening of colic symptoms.
Clinical trial included horses as young as 4 months of age.

Advantages

Relief is fast and effective. Buscopan was shown to have an 88% success rate in achieving a clinical response within 30 minutes of administration.1 1FOI Summary NADA 141-228 Administration of Buscopan results in heart rate elevation. Heart rate cannot be used as a valid indicator of severity of pain for 30 minutes after IV injection. Buscopan effects may be potentiated by use with other anticholinergic drugs. For I.V. use only. Dosage & Administration

Administer a single injection of 0.3 mg/kg body weight (0.14 mg/lb), slowly IV. This is equivalent to 30 mg N-butylscopolammonium bromide per 100 kg (220 pounds) body weight or 1.5 mL of Buscopan Injectable Solution per 100 kg (220 pounds) body weight. See insert for complete Dosing Table.

Precautions

Store at controlled room temperature, 59-86¬∫ F (15-30¬∫ C). Not recommended for use in nursing foals or in pregnant or lactating mares, as safety has not been established. The effects may be potentiated by the concomitant use of other anticholinergic drugs. Studies of concomitant administration with other drugs have not been conducted. Drug compatibility should be monitored closely in patients requiring adjunctive therapy. The safety has not been established for intramuscular (IM) administration. Administration results in heart rate elevation. Heart rate cannot be used as a valid indicator of severity of pain for 30 minutes following IV injection.
